Shoulder Pain Physical Therapy in Carson City, NV

Shoulder pain gets in the way of everything. It shows up when you reach for the top shelf, sleep on your side, put on a jacket, serve at pickleball, or press a barbell overhead. Whether it started after a busy weekend of yard work or crept in slowly over months of training, the good news is the same: shoulders are adaptable, and they respond really well to the right mix of hands-on care and progressive strength work. At The Health Lab in Carson City, that's exactly what we do.

Shoulder Pain Isn't a Sign You're Broken

When your shoulder hurts, it's easy to fall into a Google rabbit hole of scary words like tears, impingement, and degeneration. Here's something that might help: imaging often shows changes like small tendon tears in people whose shoulders feel totally fine. A finding on a scan doesn't automatically explain your pain, and it doesn't decide what your shoulder can do.

Pain is your body's protection system. It can be turned up by a sudden jump in activity, a tough training block, poor sleep, or stress. Turning it back down usually comes from building your shoulder's capacity, a little at a time, not from avoiding movement. Our post on pickleball shoulder pain explains this biopsychosocial approach in plain language.

Common Shoulder Problems We Help With

  • Rotator cuff–related shoulder pain

  • Pain at the front of the shoulder, often called biceps tendinitis (read why bicep tendinitis that won't go away often calls for looking at the whole shoulder)

  • Stiff, painful shoulders that make reaching or sleeping hard

  • Overhead athlete shoulder pain from pickleball, tennis, swimming, climbing, and CrossFit

  • Shoulder pain that seems to spread into the neck (we cover that in It Started With My Shoulder and Now My Neck Hurts Too)

  • Getting back to lifting and sport after a shoulder injury

How We Treat Shoulder Pain

Every visit is a full, one-on-one session with a Doctor of Physical Therapy. Here's what to expect:

  • Listening first. We want to know what you do, what you've tried, and what you want to get back to.

  • Hands-on manual therapy. Joint mobilization, soft tissue work, instrument-assisted techniques, and dry needling when it's a good fit. These help ease pain and make movement feel better right away.

  • Strength, strength, strength. We build up your rotator cuff, shoulder blade muscles, and the rest of your upper body with exercises that progress as you do. For many people that ends with presses, pulls, and overhead work, the same things that hurt at the start.

  • A plan that fits your life. Short home routines, training modifications so you can keep doing as much as possible, and a clear path back to your sport or job.

  • Confidence, not caution. We'll help you trust your shoulder again, so you aren't guarding it or second-guessing every reach.

Where StemWave Fits

For some people with stubborn tendon-related shoulder pain, we offer StemWave, a focused shockwave treatment that can be used alongside physical therapy. It's not a replacement for strength work. It's one more tool to help you stay active while your shoulder builds capacity. StemWave is a self-pay service and isn't billed to Medicare or other insurance. You can start with a $49 StemWave trial. Learn more on our StemWave therapy page or read how StemWave fits into active shoulder recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a referral for shoulder physical therapy in Carson City?

No. You can book physical therapy at The Health Lab directly, without a doctor's referral.

Will my shoulder pain go away on its own?

Sometimes shoulder pain eases with time, but many people find it lingers or keeps coming back. Physical therapy gives you a plan to rebuild strength and confidence, so you aren't just waiting and hoping.

Do I have to stop working out or playing pickleball?

Usually not completely. We'll help you adjust your training so you can keep doing as much as possible while your shoulder gets stronger.

Does Medicare cover shoulder physical therapy? What about StemWave?

We accept Medicare and Medicare secondary plans for physical therapy (not Medicare Advantage). StemWave is a self-pay service and isn't billed to Medicare or other insurance.

Do I need an MRI first?

Usually not. We screen every patient during the first visit and will let you know if imaging or a doctor's visit makes sense.
