Dry Needling Physical Therapy in Carson City, NV
Sometimes a sore, tense muscle just won't let go, no matter how much you stretch, foam roll, or rest. Dry needling is one of the hands-on tools our physical therapists use at The Health Lab in Carson City to help calm that tension down, so you can move more comfortably and get more out of your strength work. It's never the whole plan. It's one piece of active, personalized physical therapy aimed at getting you back to the things you love.
What Is Dry Needling?
Dry needling uses very thin, solid needles placed into muscle to help ease pain and tension and improve how the muscle moves and works. It's called "dry" because nothing is injected. Unlike acupuncture, which is based on traditional Chinese medicine, dry needling is based on modern anatomy and how muscles and the nervous system respond to treatment.
You may hear it described as "releasing knots" or "trigger points." A simpler way to think about it: dry needling gives your nervous system a strong, safe input that can quiet down a sensitive, guarded area for a while. That window of feeling better is the perfect time to move, load, and build strength.
What Can Dry Needling Help With?
Dry needling may help with muscle tension and pain in many areas. Our therapists commonly use it as part of care for:
-
Low back pain and muscle spasms (see how it fits with walking for lower back pain)
-
Neck and shoulder tension
-
Shoulder pain in overhead athletes (we talk about it in Pickleball Shoulder Pain)
-
Knee pain and tight quads in runners and riders (see Physical Therapy for Patellar Tendonitis)
-
Hip and glute tightness
-
Training-related aches that keep you from lifting, running, or playing your sport
Whether dry needling is right for you depends on your evaluation. Our therapists will assess your specific needs first and recommend it only if it fits your goals.
How Dry Needling Fits Into Physical Therapy at The Health Lab
Dry needling works best as part of a bigger plan, not as a stand-alone fix. A typical one-on-one visit might combine:
-
Hands-on manual therapy: dry needling, joint mobilization, soft tissue work, cupping, or instrument-assisted techniques (scraping), chosen for you
-
Strength training: exercises that build capacity in the area that's bothering you, progressing toward the activities you care about
-
Movement you can trust: a simple home plan and coaching so you leave feeling more confident in your body, not more fragile
The goal is for you to need us less over time, not more.
What Does It Feel Like?
Most people feel very little as the needle goes in. You might notice a dull ache, a sense of pressure, or a quick muscle twitch. That's normal and passes quickly. Some people feel a bit sore afterward, similar to after a good workout, and that usually settles within a day or so. Your therapist will check in with you the whole time, and you can stop at any point.
Don't Like Needles? No Problem.
Dry needling is always optional. If needles aren't your thing, we have plenty of other hands-on options, including cupping, instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization, joint manipulation, joint mobilization, and soft tissue mobilization. We'll build a plan you're comfortable with.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is dry needling the same as acupuncture?
No. Both use thin needles, but acupuncture is based on traditional Chinese medicine. Dry needling is based on modern anatomy and targets muscle tension and pain as part of a physical therapy plan.
Does dry needling hurt?
Most people feel very little as the needle goes in. A brief ache or muscle twitch is common, and some people feel mild soreness for a day or so afterward.
Do I need a referral for dry needling in Carson City?
No. You can book physical therapy at The Health Lab directly, and your therapist will decide with you whether dry needling is a good fit.
Do I have to get dry needling if I come to The Health Lab?
No. Dry needling is always optional. We offer many other hands-on treatments and will build a plan you're comfortable with.
Will dry needling fix my pain on its own?
Dry needling can help ease pain and tension for a while, but it works best paired with strength training and movement. That combination is what helps you feel better for the long run.
