Knee Pain Physical Therapy in Carson City, NV
Northern Nevada is made for being active: hiking the Ash Canyon trails, mountain biking, skiing at Tahoe, chasing kids around the park, or squatting in the gym. When your knee starts to ache, it can feel like all of that is on hold. It doesn't have to be. Knees are tough and adaptable, and most knee pain responds well to a plan that blends hands-on care with progressive strength training. At The Health Lab in Carson City, we'll help you get back to the things you love, often while you keep doing a version of them along the way.
Your Knees Are Built to Handle Load
It's common to hear that squats, stairs, or running are "bad for your knees." Usually, the opposite is true. Your knees get stronger and more resilient when they're loaded gradually and consistently. (We bust that myth in Top 3 Squat Myths.)
Knee pain is your body's way of asking for a change, often after a jump in mileage, a big hiking weekend, a new training program, or a stressful stretch with less sleep. It isn't a sign that your knee is wearing out. Even when a scan shows something like a meniscus tear, plenty of people do great with conservative care. Our post on meniscus tears and avoiding surgery talks more about that.

How We Treat Knee Pain
Every visit is a full, one-on-one session with a Doctor of Physical Therapy. Care usually includes:
-
Getting to know you. What you do, what's been bothering you, and what you want to get back to. Your goals shape the whole plan.
-
Hands-on manual therapy. Soft tissue work, joint mobilization, cupping, instrument-assisted techniques, and dry needling when it fits. These help ease pain and get you moving more comfortably.
-
Progressive strength training. Quads, hips, and calves do a lot of work for your knees. We start where you are and build toward the movements you care about, like squats, lunges, step-downs, jumping, or heavy lifts.
-
Smart activity changes, not total rest. We'll help you adjust your mileage, trails, or training so you can stay active while your knee builds capacity.
-
A clear plan. You'll know what to do at home, how to handle a sore day, and how we'll progress.
Where StemWave Fits
For some people with stubborn tendon-related knee pain, we offer StemWave, a focused shockwave treatment that can be added alongside physical therapy. It works best as part of an active plan, not instead of one. StemWave is a self-pay service and isn't billed to Medicare or other insurance. You can start with a $49 StemWave trial. Learn more on our StemWave therapy page.
Your First Visit
Your first visit is a full hour. We'll talk through your history, look at how you move (walking, squatting, stairs, and whatever matters for your sport), and screen for anything that needs a doctor's attention first. You'll leave with treatment already started and a few key exercises to get going.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a referral for knee physical therapy in Carson City?
No. You can book physical therapy at The Health Lab directly, without a doctor's referral.
Are squats bad for my knees?
For most people, no. Squats are a great way to build stronger, more resilient knees. We'll help you find a version that feels good now and progress from there.
Do I have to stop hiking or running while my knee gets better?
Usually not completely. We'll help you adjust distance, terrain, or pace so you can stay active while you build strength.
Can physical therapy help with a meniscus tear?
Many people with meniscus-related knee pain do well with physical therapy. We'll assess your knee, talk through your options, and refer you to a physician if we think you need one.
Does Medicare cover knee physical therapy? What about StemWave?
We accept Medicare and Medicare secondary plans for physical therapy (not Medicare Advantage). StemWave is a self-pay service and isn't billed to Medicare or other insurance.
